While many antique dealers learn through experience, there are ways to get a good background for the business. Many major universities offer courses in art history.

"Go out and get antiques," says dealer Pat Johnson. "Buy them. You can't learn it in school. You have to read a lot of books and you have to look at a lot of antiques."
