The perfusionist should be in the background, but he also has a duty to do his job right -- and that comes first.

By speaking up, you are able to convene a brief meeting of those involved. It is decided that the surgery should be postponed until a machine that is operating without problems can be found.

The machine may have made it through perfectly, but why take a risk? There's too much at stake to keep silent in a situation like that.
