Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Now that you've read through some of the complicated wording frequently used in the legal profession and have rewritten the letter, check your answer with the one below:

I enclose an original and a copy of the Petition for Letters of Administration. Please review, sign and return both. I will have Mr. Brown sign and file the petition, and set a date for a hearing to issue the Letters. You need not attend, but Mr. Brown must be there.

Please send me all documents showing debts incurred by the estate. After all the letters are issued, I will open a bank account for the estate and pay the bills. The checks will require both your signature and your mother's.

There are probably other words that could have been cut but as long as your letter is shorter, concise and easy to understand, you did fine. What you've just accomplished is a step towards fantastic paralegal communication skills.

Jennifer Calhoun is an instructor in a legal assistant program. She says the communication skills taught in English class are essential. "[One] thing that does help is a post-secondary [background] in English because of the research and writing capabilities. And comprehension -- to twist your mind around law is an exercise in itself!" she says.
