A couple has ordered an oak bedroom set from you. The design they want will be very beautiful and very expensive.

You require all your customers to pay a 50 percent deposit before you start. Not all customers like to pay a deposit. Some people are afraid of being ripped off. Some fear the end product won't match the original design and they'll be stuck with furniture they don't like.

This couple's deposit will be $5,000. Because their bedroom set will be custom-built, you have to protect yourself.

It's going to take you five weeks to complete and hundreds of dollars in materials, so you've got a lot at stake. You have an excellent reputation, so the couple shouldn't be too worried.

Write down what you'll say to the couple. You want to clearly explain why a deposit is necessary. Make sure you don't make it sound like you don't trust them. After all, they trust you to make the furniture.
