Furniture designers are likely to have diverse educational backgrounds. Some are self-taught or mentored. Others have completed design courses at community colleges, and still others combine degrees in fine arts with basic woodworking courses. Talent, creativity, ability and commitment are indispensable.

The American Society of Furniture Designers offers a student mentor program. This pairs the student with a professional member with the intent of facilitating the student's entry and advancement into the industry. Generally speaking, designers with formal training will find more employment opportunities.
