Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You see a compromise that might work in this situation. Perhaps the natives could fish for food while the talks are ongoing and wait to complete their commercial fishing until after an agreement has been met, or until the fishing season has opened. But it might take a bit more discussion before either side agrees to this.

These are the answers you get from the native representative:

1. Name two reasons why you feel you must fish now, during the talks.

It's our constitutional right to fish, regardless of the fishing season. Secondly, the fish will have disappeared if we wait until the discussions are complete.

2. What will happen if you stop fishing during the discussions?

If we wait until the discussions are complete, our people will starve and won't have been able to earn a living for the year.

These are the government representative's answers:

1. Name two reasons why you feel you must stop all native fishing boats on the river.

All native fishing must stop because it isn't fair to other commercial fishers who must wait, and it isn't good for fish stocks.

2. Why do you think everyone must follow the government's conservation guidelines?

Everyone must follow government fishing conservation guidelines because the survival of the fish stock depends upon it.
