Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You go to the public without discussing any of the issues.

At a public meeting, hundreds of people turn out to say their piece about the forestry industry. However, nothing gets resolved because there are too many issues and questions on the table.

People leave the meeting angry and upset because they feel nothing was resolved.

Perhaps it might have been better to wait to consult the public until after you had agreed upon a loose framework for discussion and had found answers to some of the more difficult questions.

"You need to decide when an issue is ready for public consultation or not," says Tracy St. Claire. She works for a treaty commission. "You have to decide how fast to move on certain issues, how fast the decision process should be going and who is consulted along the way."
