Additional Information

In most cases, a master's degree or PhD is necessary to become a director of player operations.

Gayle Fenton is the director of student-athlete services at California State University in Long Beach, California. She suggests "a master's degree in counseling, sports psychology or higher education. You must be willing to get your foot in the door. Begin with a low-paid internship if necessary."

A career as a director of player operations can open plenty of doors for changes in your life. Cheryl Descent is an intramural sports coordinator at a university. She says if you're interested in this field, you should "research old and current job advertisements. This will tell you what potential employers are looking for in terms of background, experience and education."

Despite the glamour that would seem to go with this career, Fenton is quick to point out that it requires a lot of work. "You must be willing to volunteer your time or work many long hours for very little money to get in."
