Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are an officer investigating a couple suspected of several armed robberies. They left a crime scene 30 minutes ago, traveling approximately 35 m.p.h. You do a quick calculation to figure out how far they are from the scene now:

Rate x Time = Distance

Rate = 35 miles per hour
Time = 0.5 hours
D = X

X = 35 miles x 0.5
X = 17.5 miles

You expect that the car has gone about 18 miles from the spot where you are standing.

You radio ahead, and the car is found 28 miles from where you are. If the witness was right about the amount of time that lapsed, what speed was the car actually going?

R = D / T

Rate = X
Time = 0.5 hours
Distance = 28 miles

X = 28 miles / 0.5 hours
X = 56 miles

The car was actually traveling at 56 miles per hour.
