Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution
You give a below-average mark because of the mistakes.
This is the real-life decision made by foreign language teacher Timothy
Pope.
Ambition and creativity should be rewarded. However, a teacher also has
to make sure students grasp the basics. It's not always easy to decide
how to mark a paper.
"It's always a judgment call whether you're going to give
a really good mark, and therefore reinforcement for something that shows the
student really getting to grips and really developing a feel for the language,"
Pope says.
Mistakes that are made because the student was too ambitious might be overlooked.
However, you just reviewed the area Asad made mistakes in. He deserves a lower-than-average
mark.
"It really depends on whether the kinds of mistakes being made are in things
you've just been intensely reviewing or not," Pope says. "I, personally,
would reward ambition, and be fairly firm in penalizing [for mistakes]."
