Real-Life Decision Making

Students practice putting casts on each other in a lab situation, but real life offers daily challenges. "Every single human being you see will be a different scenario," says instructor Tom Byrne.

Byrne says orthopedic technologists must use their critical thinking skills in these special situations. "The classic problem is when there is a patient with specific needs," he says.

For example, you have a patient with a fractured upper arm (humerus). The standard practice would be a long arm cast, but this patient has special needs. He has numerous health problems, including terminal cancer.
