Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You see if you can build something that will make the patient as comfortable and self-sufficient as possible.

This is the real-life decision Tom Byrne faces all the time.

He says you have to think about what you can give the patient that would help him live as normal as possible. "There are alternatives that are technically challenging. Do you have the ability to come up with an appropriate alternative?"

He says in the real world, this decision is influenced by the patient's environment and expectations. Byrne offers another example: "If you have a mom with two kids and two arms that don't work, you have to produce something that will let that mom do her job, but still treat the fracture."
