Real-Life Math -- Solution

To find the answer, you use the following formula:

Hypotenuse = length of the leg (32 inches)
Opposite = distance between bed and heel
Angle = 45 degrees

sin (angle) = opposite / hypotenuse
sin (45) = opposite / 32

First, you need to figure out what sin (45) is.

sin (45) = 1 / (square root of 2)
sin (45) = 0.707

Now you can plug this back into the formula:

0.707 = opposite / 32
opposite = 32 inches x 0.707
opposite = 22.6 inches

The patient's leg must be 22.6 inches off the bed in order to be at a 45-degree angle.
