Real-Life Math

Health educators are dispensers of "wellness." They make their living getting information about healthy living out to the public. Their area of expertise can be anything from good nutrition to information and warnings about smoking and drinking. Health educators help us better understand our bodies and what it takes to keep healthy.

A friend of yours, Keith, is 25 pounds overweight. He stands six feet tall and weighs 250 pounds. He is asking you to put him on a healthy diet. You agree to help.

"In diet considerations, math comes into play," says health educator Irene McNee. "In these things, we deal in pounds and inches and things like body mass indexes, so we need to know math. Even the simplest of math tells us that the term '40 pounds overweight' is a bad thing."

Here is what you know about Keith:

  • He weighs 250 pounds
  • A pound of fat equals 3,500 calories
  • You are cutting back his daily calorie intake by 300 a day (perfectly safe diet)
  • The diet will last for 150 days

What should Keith weight at the end of his 150-day diet?
