Health educators need postgraduate education in biology, social sciences, psychology or education. A graduate degree in public health is usually necessary for senior positions.

It's highly recommended that health educators be certified by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC). After passing the national exam given by the NCHEC, applicants are considered certified health education specialists (CHES).

Extra Requirements

Employers may require or prefer that health education specialists obtain certification, such as the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) credential offered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc or the Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) credential offered by the Certification Board for Diabetes Care and Education.
