Real-Life Math -- Solution

How many ounces of formula does the little boy need to consume each day?

Formula needed = (5 kg x 110 calories of food per kg per day) / 20 calories per ounce
Formula needed = 550 / 20
Formula needed = 27.5 ounces

The boy needs 27.5 ounces of baby formula per day.

"We don't use calculus," says Frances McNeil. She is a discharge coordinator. "But we use basic mathematics regularly to calculate medication dosages or daily food intake requirements."
