Real-Life Decision Making

It's fishing season and you are a fisheries officer patrolling a bay on the Pacific coast. As you cruise up the shoreline, you see a number of commercial fishing boats hauling in their crab traps.

Doing a random spot check, you decide to come alongside one of the fishing boats. As you approach the boat, you cut the motor. The fisher secures your boat to his and helps you on.

You look over the fisher's catch of crabs. The crabs look a bit small, so you measure them. Some of the crabs are 6.5 inches across, but a few others are only 6.4 inches, 6.2 inches and 6.3 inches.

"If the size limit [minimum] is 165 mm [6.5 inches], you might find someone with a crab that measures 164 mm [6.4 inches]," says Ari Turunen. "Then you have to decide what you will do."

The crabs are a tad undersized. You think you will just give a warning, but then you flip through your book and see that this fisher has had one prior warning for a similar violation.

What do you do?
