Real-Life Math

Chinese medicine has been used for years to restore and maintain good health. Understanding the art means understanding ideas such as chi -- the vitality, or energy source, that makes us alive.

Although Chinese medicine is a holistic practice, practitioners must also understand the functions of the human body.

"We use math to measure out dosages and to weigh items," says Fred Kwak, a Chinese medicine practitioner. "But you need to have known math to study and to understand the concepts of Chinese medicine and the human body."

You are a student of Chinese medicine. You are becoming more familiar with the workings of the human body. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners are interested in the human nervous system, and use the pulse as an indication of what may be ailing a person. Answer the following questions about the human body to test your knowledge:

  1. A human heart beats an average of 80 beats per minute. How many times does a human heart beat per day?
  2. Signals in your nervous system travel at 300 feet per second. If your patient is 5.5 feet tall, how long will it take for a patient to realize his foot has been touched? Assume that the signal travels on a direct path from the foot to the brain.
