Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are studying to become a Chinese medical practitioner, and you want to know more about the human body.

  1. The heart beats 80 times per minute. How many times per day is this?

    How many minutes in an hour? 60
    How many hours in a day? 24
    Minutes in a day = 60 minutes x 24 hours
    There are 1,440 minutes in a day.

    Heart beats 80 times per minute
    80 beats x 1,440 minutes = 115,200 times per day
    A human heart beats 115,200 times per day.

  2. Nerve signals travel 300 feet per second. The length of travel is 5.5 feet.

    The nerve length is 5.5 feet.
    Rate x Time = Distance
    Rate = 300 feet/second
    Time = ?
    Distance = 5.5 feet

    Solve for time:
    Time = Distance/Rate
    T = 5.5 feet/ 300 feet/second
    T = 0.0183 seconds

    It will take the patient 0.0183 seconds to feel the touch.

"We use math to calculate different points and weights," says Fred Kwak.
