Real-Life Communication

While enforcing laws and getting people out of sticky wildlife situations, animal control officers (ACOs) often deal with the public more than with animals. Strong people skills are a must. They also need a thick skin and some diplomatic talent to deal with angry pet owners.

"It can be very challenging," says ACO Bruce Peet. "It's much different than I expected it would be. It's much more people-oriented than animal, because you're not just solving animal problems, you're solving people problems. Animals are just doing what they do naturally. It's people who allow it."

You are an animal control officer in northern California. Your colleagues at the California Department of Fish and Game have received news that a mountain lion has been sighted in a residential area. Several chicken coops have already been attacked. Before the authorities can track down the cat, it's up to you to alert the community.

In 200 words or less, write a bulletin for radio announcers in the area. Mention that no one should attempt to catch or kill the cat, and anyone who sees it should immediately call the state fish and game department.
