Real-Life Decision Making

Jaira just moved to your country. She is eight months pregnant. Before coming to see you, she had not been able to see a doctor during her pregnancy.

After her exam, the lab results are returned and you are unhappy to learn that Jaira has cervical cancer. "Cervix cancer is a terrible disease that can kill women," says Dr. Frederick Stehman. Stehman is an obstetrician gynecologist.

The cancer is diagnosed much later than you would have liked. The only chance for a cure that you can think of is a hysterectomy, the removal of the uterus. The problem is that the baby must first be removed from Jaira.

Jaira is frightened, and says the survival of her baby comes first.
