Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You do a caesarean section to remove the baby so that a hysterectomy can be done.

This is the real-life decision that Dr. Frederick Stehman would make.

This solution is recommended because the baby is old enough to be able to survive comfortably outside the womb. The hysterectomy also offers a chance for the mother to live.

However, the decision must be made with other doctors and with the patient herself. "How do we balance the need to do what is right for the patient and what is right for the infant?" says Stehman. "If she was only four months pregnant, we may have had to wait."
