Event planner Yamina Kahn says a marketing background will help event planners wanting to get involved in the entrepreneurial side of things.

Through hard work, students can make their way in the business simply by finding work with an event planner. "However, companies are no longer taking people off the street and hiring them," says Ted Wykes, who teaches meeting and event planning. "They like to employ people that have taken courses or a program in meeting or event planning."

Community colleges offer continuing education courses in event and meeting planning. Diploma programs, which employers often prefer, are offered at a few universities and colleges. More colleges are offering them as demand continues to build.

If you like to organize activities, start getting practice now. Help organize school dances, events or sports tournaments. Try your hand at organizing events in the community as well.
