Insider Info

Additional Information

Landscape contractors need to know about turf care, horticulture, ornamental plants, soils, irrigation, equipment, fertilizers and pesticides. They also need to be able to estimate the cost of projects.

That requires years of hands-on experience combined with a bachelor's degree, a two-year associate's degree or a one-year vocational technical degree in grounds management or a related discipline.

The Professional Grounds Management Society and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America certify landscape professionals with formal education after a few years experience in the field. You have to pass an exam to be certified.
