Storm chaser Jon Mitchell says no formal education or training is required, "but I recommend that anyone who wants to chase storms learn as much as they can about weather."

Mitchell recommends wannabe storm chasers take a storm spotter class, which teaches you how to identify features of a storm and how to report them to the National Weather Service. Mitchell stresses that without a good knowledge of weather and storm chasing procedures, "storm chasing can be very dangerous."
