Real-Life Communication

You are a school bus driver on a regular route that carries 30 children in Grades 1 through 4. Jimmy, one of the passengers, has been causing problems for a week. He's been loud and mouthy, and refuses to remain seated.

His behavior is not only bothersome to the other riders, but also dangerous. It's time to take action.

"Communications skills should be a bus driver's strongest attribute," says Heinz Hammer, a city transit bus driver. "I usually lay the law down the first day on that run. I find if you treat kids with respect, they almost always reciprocate."

Write a casual letter to the principal of the school and the child's parents, outlining the child's misbehavior, as well as a suggested course of action if the behavior doesn't improve.

Be sure to remind everyone that you may have to suspend Jimmy from riding the bus if the situation doesn't change.
