Real-Life Math -- Solution

Part A

You're trying to figure out how much money you should have in the purse if you have 22 passengers on your bus.

10 people bought a 1-way ticket at a cost of $11.

10 x 11 = $110

8 people bought a 2-way ticket at $18.

8 x 18 = $144

The rest of the passengers are using the second half of a 2-way ticket bought earlier. That means they don't owe you any money.

$110 + $144 = $254 total

You have $254 in the purse before you pull away from the curb.

Part B

To get to the airport 1 hour before the passengers' plane leaves, you should arrive at 6:30 a.m. It is now 6:20 a.m. You have 10 minutes. Convert that to hours:

10 minutes / 60 minutes per hour = 0.17 hours

You're traveling at a speed of 50 mph, and you have 12 more miles to get to the airport.

R x T = D
50 mph x T = 12 miles
12 / 50 = T
12 / 50 = 0.24 hours

The 0.24 hours is more time than the 0.17 hoursthat you require to get to the airport on time. You won't make it.
