What They Do

Producers and Directors Career Video

Insider Info

A casting director is responsible for selecting principal actors to play roles. Some casting directors also specialize in selecting extras.

They have a lot of responsibilities. The movies involved may be multimillion-dollar ones, and the casting director has to cast the "perfect" actors in the roles.

"Directors have to have a lot of trust in you because you're pretty much deciding the look of the film," says casting director Michael Shortt.

"A movie with Sharon Stone is going to look totally different than a Sandra Bullock movie. It's going to determine a whole lot -- production design, wardrobe -- everything."
