You decide to tell your assistant about the impending layoffs.

You inform your assistant that she will probably be laid off next week. She tells other people at the company of the impending layoffs. Soon word reaches the owners that the employees have been tipped off about the layoffs. They are very angry with you. You lose your job.

CMAs say that in this situation the best thing to do is to keep quiet. It may not be easy to withhold it from your friend, but your job and credibility are at stake.

"As a CMA, one of the standards for ethical conduct is confidentiality," says CMA Jim Horsh. "Management accountants have a responsibility to refrain from disclosing confidential information. In a situation like this your credibility could be damaged and the management could lose their ability to trust you."
