Insider Info

Additional Information

To become a certified management accountant in the U.S., you need a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in any area is sufficient, but some background in accounting is essential. Majors in commerce or economics and an MBA are recommended.

Two years of work experience in management or finance is also required. Applicants must then pass a four-part exam administered by the Institute of Management Accountants.

"Get as much education as you can," says CMA Katherine Browne. "The more education you have the more doors that are open to you.

"Secondly, try to take courses that are not only focused on accounting so that you get an understanding of all facets of an organization."
