College Academic Advisor

Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

Even though she estimates her job is "99 percent communication, one percent math," advisor Debbie Graczyk says she performs several tasks involving math.

She uses a set formula to figure what grades students need to obtain a certain grade point average. She also has to balance a budget and prepare reports that include crucial number-crunching.

Here's an example of what she and other academic advisors may be faced with.

The academic advisor must prepare two versions of an annual report for the entire university staff and the board of directors. The 10 board members each receive an extended version of the report (55 pages), while the 30 staff members each receive the condensed version (22 pages).

How much paper will the academic advisor need to print all versions of the annual report?
