Additional Information

There are no official educational requirements for literary agents. In fact, anyone can set up shop and become one. However, those who are serious about getting into the business may want to apprentice at a larger agency or at a publishing house.

"Most literary agents come to this profession through other jobs, such as editors, journalists, writers, publishers and lawyers -- although very few lawyers act as agents," says Stephen Wheeler, an agent in Colorado.

"Don't study only literary criticism if you want to be an agent," says agent Wendy Keller. "Study business administration. This is a business that just happens to sell books."

Studies in business administration can also be helpful in learning how to manage a business and sell a product. Many schools offer programs in commerce and business administration.
