Real-Life Math -- Solution

You are an art therapist traveling to another town to conduct a seminar. You need to take your supplies with you. How much will you need to take?

1. You decide to take 1/2 gallon of blue paint, 1/8 gallon of yellow, 3/4 gallon of red, and 5/8 gallon of black paint. How many gallons of paint will you have to carry to the seminar?

1/2 gallon + 1/8 gallon + 3/4 gallon + 5/8 gallon

First, you need to find a common denominator so that you can add the fractions. The common denominator is 8.

Blue paint:

1/2 = x/8
Cross-multiply so that 2x = 8
x = 4
1/2 = 4/8

Red paint:

3/4 = x/8
Cross-multiply so that 4x = 24
x = 6
3/4 = 6/8

Now add the 4 figures:

4/8 blue + 1/8 yellow + 6/8 red + 5/8 black = 16/8
16/8 = 2

You will take a total of 2 gallons of paint with you.

2.You need 300 sheets of paper. If each pad has 75 sheets, how many pads do you need to take?

300 sheets / 75 sheets = 4

You will need 4 pads of paper.

Tom Brudenell says that to have a master's degree in any social science, you need a certain amount of math. Soon, he expects a master's degree will be required for art therapist certification in every state and province. "You have to understand what validity means, reliability, norms. It's statistics, so you need some basic math skills to do the statistics."
