Depending on where they work, art therapists may require a master's degree. Most hold undergraduate degrees in counseling, psychology or a related field. While no art experience is necessary, most are accomplished artists.

State requirements for private practice vary across the country. Practice rules and regulations are available from state licensing boards. About 20 schools in North America offer degree programs in art therapy.

Extra Requirements

Employers may require or prefer recreational therapists to be certified. The National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) offers the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) credential.
