Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Your steps in planning for emergency responses:

  1. Provide first aid training for employees at each worksite.
  2. Supply first aid equipment and supplies to each worksite.
  3. Prepare written emergency response plans for all possible emergencies: fire, injuries and deaths, spills, leaks and natural disasters.
  4. Distribute the plans and make sure everyone is aware of them.
  5. Provide lists of emergency contacts.
  6. Schedule regular tests for emergency equipment.
  7. Train employees in emergency response and conduct drills.

Communication skills are important to oil well fire specialists, especially in times of emergency, says Sharon McCoy. During those times, tension is high and split-second decisions must be made, she says.

"You have to be able to watch your supervisor and pay attention to his directions. Sometimes the noise can be deafening and the crew will communicate using sign language. It's crucial," says McCoy.
