Real-Life Communication -- Solution

Here's what you could do:

In cases such as these, you will need to use a variety of communication aids.

  1. You will have to get a translator who can help the Turkish couple understand what you're saying.
  2. You will need to find charts, graphs and pictures to help your patients understand what they need to know.
  3. You will need to book as many sessions as it takes to discuss the issues with your new patients.

"I have used translators when the patients don't speak English, and I have used charts and graphs to explain things to a patient," says Dr. Barry Jacobs. He is a reproductive endocrinologist from Texas.

"I discovered a long time ago it's far easier to do my job if my patients really understand what they will be doing. I make them active participants in their care. Many times, alternatives can be done. I have to tell them what their options are. "
