Real-Life Decision Making -- Solution

You tell the parents they will have to wait until you've discussed it with the team.

This is the real-life decision that Dr. Jean-Pierre Chanoine would make. He is a pediatric endocrinologist.

"This is a classical dilemma," says Chanoine. "In such a case, it is very important that I consult with other people, and that I make every possible effort to arrive upon the right decision."

You think to yourself, "In my opinion, this child is a girl. But I don't want to make that decision without consulting others. I want to be sure that I am not overlooking something. A baby's future depends on this."

The parents complain, but you explain the importance of making the right decision.

You call a meeting. The multidisciplinary team examines the evidence and discusses all possibilities. Eventually, after much study, the group decides that the baby is a girl.

You inform the parents and continue to enjoy good relationships with your colleagues. You know that you have done the right thing, and that you have made every possible effort to determine the baby's correct gender.
