Real-Life Math

You do not have to have strong math skills if you want to become an immigration lawyer, says Michael Greene. He is an immigration lawyer. Basic arithmetic skills suffice. But it would not hurt to be comfortable with numbers and figures, especially when immigration lawyers have to deal with business clients.

"If they are business clients, it would be important to have an understanding of financial statements and documentation," says Elizabeth Bryson. She is an immigration lawyer.

You are an immigration lawyer. A foreign entrepreneur wants to live and start a business in the United States. As part of the residency application, you have to calculate his total net worth. You go through his financial records and come up with the following financial picture.

  • A 25 percent share in a company -- the company is worth $500,000
  • The company also owes him additional shares worth $100,000
  • His mortgage is worth $400,000
  • The total value of his house and other personal items is $500,000
  • He must still fulfill a contract worth $75,000 to purchase a number of personal items

Remember: net worth is assets minus liabilities.
