LPNs provide for the emotional and physical comfort and safety of patients. They observe, record and report changes in patients' conditions. They also perform nursing functions such as administering medications and therapeutic treatments.

LPNs working in a hospital take temperatures, blood pressures and pulse and respiration rates. They also:

  • Dress wounds
  • Observe patients
  • Administer medications
  • Assemble and use equipment such as catheters, tracheotomy tubes, and oxygen supplies
  • Record food and fluid intake
  • Check on IV equipment
  • Apply compresses and hot and cold packs
  • Bathe and dress patients

LPNs need physical strength and stamina, compassion, self-confidence, good judgment and decision-making skills.
