Real-Life Math -- Solution

To start, reduce the non-blues:

1 gallon yellow No. 1 x 0.10 = 0.1 gallons reduction
1 - 0.1 = 0.9 gallons yellow No. 1
0.8 gallons purple No. 1 x 0.10 = 0.08 gallons reduction
0.8 - 0.08 = 0.72 gallons purple No. 1

Now add on the reduction in No. 4.

0.1 + 0.08 + 2.6 = 2.78 gallons blue No. 4

So the single-batch formula is:

  • 2.78 gallons blue No. 4
  • 0.72 gallons purple No. 1
  • 0.9 gallons yellow No. 1
  • 2.6 gallons blue No. 6

Now, triple the formula:

2.78 x 3 = 8.34 gallons blue No. 4
0.72 x 3 = 2.16 gallons purple No. 1
0.9 x 3 = 2.7 gallons yellow No. 1
2.6 x 3 = 7.8 gallons blue No. 6

Autobody repair instructor Kenneth Kolisnyk says the necessary math skills for auto-customization are very rudimentary. "They need to know ratios. That's in mixing materials, but most of them are done with mixing sticks anyway. It's really basic," he says.
