Additional Information

Training in this field comes in various forms. There are several centers across North America that offer training on site, and through home study packages and instructional videos.

Certification courses are generally about five days long, not including the required fieldwork. You can take advanced courses, as well.

Many professionals in the field recommend a background in human massage therapy, combined with a solid knowledge of horses.

Consider taking anatomy courses while still in high school, recommends Dee Schreiber, vice-president of marketing at an equine massage therapy school. "We teach people as if they haven't taken any of these course. But it's a lot harder for those who have no background in horse anatomy."
