Real-Life Activities

Real-Life Math

When you work as a civil engineering technician, you serve as the hands-on member of the engineering team. You will support the work of the engineers and technologists by carrying out many of the tasks that bring their project to life.

Some of these tasks include computer-aided drafting, field surveys, quality control checks and project cost estimations.

"Knowledge of basic math is useful," says Ramli Halim. He is a civil engineer. But he notes that unless you plan to be involved in design work, advanced math knowledge is not that critical.

You are an engineering technician charged with estimating the cost of building materials for a residential housing development. One item you need to estimate is the amount of concrete required for the foundations of 9 ranch-style houses.

You will calculate the amount of concrete in cubic volume. The foundations of each house measure 20 feet by 40 feet. The thickness of the concrete will be 2 feet. How many cubic yards of concrete will you need to figure into your cost analysis?

Remember:
1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet
