Real-Life Communication -- Solution

You have made two attempts to discuss the problems with the contractor. It is obvious he is not taking you seriously. Local codes are being violated. You would not be upholding your professional responsibility if you let it go.

It is time to contact the engineer you work for. Here's what your report could look like:

Overall, the project ran very smoothly. I did, however, notice one problem that must be addressed.

As you know, the city building code says that property and streets have to be kept clear of sediment, or at least must be cleaned every day.

The heavy equipment operators on this project piled sand into an area that would send mud on to neighboring driveways. The trucks also tracked dirt on to the public road in front of the site.

On two different occasions, I approached the contractor and asked him to move the sand dumps to a different area. He ignored me both times. This is very unprofessional behavior. I recommend that we deal with a different contractor in the future.

"Communication skills are useful to record things happening in construction projects, to forward ideas and provide instructions to others in a clear and precise manner," says Ramli Halim. He is a civil engineer.
