Real-Life Decision Making

Today's logistics managers juggle a lot of concerns. They are trying to meet the demand for their product and keep costs as low as possible at the same time. They do this through just-in-time ordering, which involves purchasing raw materials only when they're needed.

You are the logistics manager for a sneaker company. Your company is preparing to launch its latest product, the Pavement Blaster, at the start of the summer, which is five months away.

You are responsible for ordering the components your company doesn't make, including the laces and the insoles.

When you call to order the insoles, your supplier tells you that he has a glut of them on hand. He is willing to sell you the insoles at a 20 percent discount as long as you take delivery of them immediately. He needs to know before the close of business today.

Your company doesn't have much room in the warehouse now, but could offer a sharp discount on existing sneakers to free up the space in as little as one week.

What do you do?
