Real-Life Math

Since logistics management is the science of controlling the flow of raw materials, inventory and finished goods, you might assume it involves a lot of math. And you'd be right.

You are a logistics manager at a company that makes inline skates. You make some of the skates and purchase several different additional components. Your workers then assemble, package and ship the finished product. For each pair of skates, you buy 12 wheels, 60 inches of lace and 40 ball bearings.

The busy summer season is on the horizon. For 6 weeks, production will increase by 25 percent. Regular production is 160 pair per week. How much of each component do you need to have on hand for each of those 6 weeks? (Hint: you buy lace material by the yard.)
