Real-Life Math

A goal of many martial arts instructors is to one day open their own studios. It's a goal that requires strong math skills.

You are an experienced instructor and a former champion. You are well-known in your area and feel ready to run your own studio.

You're going to need some capital, so you visit several banks. They all want you to give them hard numbers to show the studio can be profitable.

Here is your income:

  • Number of children's group classes per year: 200
  • Number of children per class: 15
  • Cost of children's group classes: $15 per class
  • Number of adult singles classes per year: 350
  • Price per class: $25
  • Adult group classes per year: 100
  • Students per class: 8
  • Price per class: $12

Fixed expenses:

  • Rent: $300 per month
  • Utilities and equipment: $250 per month
  • Salaries: 2 assistant instructors at $8 per hour, estimated 200 hours each

The banks want to see you turn a gross profit (before taxes and expenses) of at least $50,000. Will you be able to convince the bank to back you?
