Additional Information

To be an instructor in the martial arts, you must study and train for many years at a school or organization that offers instruction.

"One should have at least a black belt and several years of experience. Generally brown belts assist instructors and learn how to teach. Higher-ranked students [brown belts, first-degree black belts] generally help teach. It's a time to see if a student has the ability to transmit knowledge to others," says instructor Lawrence Fowler.

Do instructors have to be certified? "This varies greatly from one system to another, but most martial arts organizations have instructor certification programs with specific requirements," says instructor Gary Eikenberry.

If you intend to open your own martial arts school, a strong business foundation is important. Instructor Stan Lee is also national director for the U.S. Martial Arts Association school management program. "I'd recommend pursuing at least an associate's degree, if not a bachelor's, in business administration," he says.
