Real-Life Math -- Solution

  1. Does the governor have time for a 15-minute meeting with the Hilltown airport commissioner at the airport before he goes to meet with the mayor?

You need to calculate at what time the governor will arrive at the airport in Hilltown:

He leaves the Sunnyside office at 11 a.m. He travels for half an hour.

    11:00 am + 30 minutes = 11:30 a.m.

He waits for 15 minutes for the flight, which leaves at 11:45 a.m. The flight is 45 minutes.

    11:45 a.m. + 45 minutes = 12:30 p.m.

He will arrive at the Hilltown airport at 12:30 p.m.

If the drive to the mayor's office from the airport is half an hour, and the meeting is at 1 p.m., the governor has no time to meet with the airport commissioner before meeting with the mayor. That's because 12:30 p.m. + 30 minutes = 1 p.m.

  2. Does the governor have time to meet with the airport commissioner after his meeting with the mayor?

You need to calculate at what time the governor will return from the mayor's office and get to the Hilltown airport.

The meeting begins at 1 p.m. and lasts for half an hour.

    1 p.m. + 30 minutes = 1:30 p.m.

It takes half an hour to drive back to the airport.

    1:30 p.m. + 30 minutes = 2 p.m.

The flight leaves at 3:45 p.m. Knowing that the governor must be at the gate 15 minutes prior to the flight, the governor must be at the gate at 3:30 p.m. This leaves him plenty of time to meet with the commissioner.

You schedule a meeting for the governor and the commissioner at 2:30 p.m., in case the meeting with the mayor runs long or the traffic is congested.
