Insider Info

The president of the United States hires a chief of protocol. Each of the 50 states also has protocol officials. In addition, major cities also have protocol officers working in mayoral offices.

The United States has 250 diplomats and consular posts around the world.

As globalization becomes a reality, the need for protocol will continue in both government, private companies and in the military.

"Most every base will have a protocol office with a minimum of two employees," says Oriella Goff. Goff is a deputy chief of protocol at a U.S. military installation in Italy. "The bigger the base, the more employees."

Protocol officers working at different levels of government or in the military earn different salaries. In the military, protocol officers receive salaries according to their rank, says Goff.

Earnings and employment information from the U.S. Department of Labor is not available for this field at this time.
