Real-Life Decision Making

A concerned neighbor calls you to deal with a domestic dispute next door. When you arrive at the home, you and your partner can hear the sound of raised voices even before you turn off the car engine.

A 10-year-old girl answers the door when you knock. The shouting continues in another part of the house. You identify yourself and say the neighbors have reported a disturbance. The girl nods and disappears. A moment later, the yelling stops and a woman comes to the door carrying a sobbing baby. The woman looks like she's been crying.

She tells you everything is fine. Her husband has had a bad day, but it's OK, she says. At this point, a man appears in the background, staggering and swearing. The woman opens the door and lets you and your partner inside. The man stops yelling and walks away. You follow him into the kitchen while your partner talks to the woman.

In the kitchen, it's clear the man has had too much to drink. He's slurring his words and there are several empty beer cans on the counter. He's pacing the room, obviously angry. It's an ugly situation all round. Should you counsel this person or arrest him?

What do you do?
